Rules for writing numbers

One of the most confusing issues in writing is how to represent a number properly. Understanding the problem, we will provide you with some basic rules for writing numbers. You can either put it as a numeral, which is a symbol of a number such as 1 or I, or spell it out as words.

Spell a number out

It is advisable to spell out the numbers that are smaller than ten, for example two cups of coffee. There is also another rule that suggests spelling out one-word numbers. That means you should write out twenty but not 27.

Use the comma

Experts recommend that you should use commas as thousand separators in your writing because it is easier to read large numbers, especially in business writing. Of course you don’t want to make a mistake between 10000$ and 100000$, do you? Thus, to help clarify your text, write 10,000$ or 100,000$. However, if it is a rounded number over a million, it is better to write it as a numeral and a word. For instance, 400 million instead of 400,000,000.

Two numbers in one sentence

In case you have two related numbers in the same sentence, it is recommended that you write both as numerals if you write one as a numeral. Here is an example to show how it works:

“Our company’s revenue increases only 9 percentages this month, but I believe that we can make it more than 22 percentages by the end of this year.”

In another case where you have two numbers next to each other, use a numeral for one of them and words for the latter. For example,

‘We make an experiment on 100 twelve-inch snails.”

Beginning of a sentence

If you put a number at the beginning of a sentence, write it out as words. Write it Forty-seven years ago instead of 47 years ago. Nevertheless, if it is a ridiculously long number, consider rephrasing your sentence. It is better to write

“There are 14,568 people attended the carnival.”

“Fourteen thousand five hundred sixty-eight people attended the carnival.”
